The Catholic Monastery of Kalograion comprised the headquarters of the French Expeditionary Forces Command, who settled in the city in December 1915. In the late 1990s, an honorary pilaster dedicated to the memory of the French soldiers was discovered on June 21st street, in the unallocated space of a demolished building.
It was initially erected in 1916, just before their departure, in one of the then public places that were later occupied by the refugees. It is made by stone, supported by a two-step crepis, and bears the inscription “Gloire aux soldats ports pour leur patrie” (“Glory to the soldiers who died for their motherland”).
