The church of St. Athanasius was built at the beginning of the 19th century, probably in the place of an older one, next to a Hellenistic tumulus, with the bell tower on its top (2nd half of 19th century). It is 1 km away from the archaeological site of the Hellenistic and Roman times to the north of the settlement, indicating the cultural continuity of the area.

The church is a three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica with a peristyle on the west and south sides, featuring on the interior icons by the painter Nikolaos Giakoumis and, mainly, by the well known family group of painters from Kolakia (Chalastra) (1806). It, also, houses a group of icons painted by the Misailidis Brothers (1910) and brought by the refugees of Tzelepkioi (eastern Thrace), in 1924, after the Asia Minor disaster, to Toumba. The frescoes in the interior are signhed in 1862 by the painter Ditzos from Debar. To Ditzos we may attribute, also, the painted pulpit of the church.
