The church of St. Demetrius in the center of Axioupolis (former Boemitsa) is located on a low hill, where there are indications for the existence of antiquities of earlier periods. It is a three-aisled wooded-roofed cemetery basilica of the early 19th century, with an earlier phase in the post-Byzantine period. Remarkable frescoes are preserved in the interior by the renowned painter from Kolakia (Chalastra), Nikolaos Constantinou, dating back to 1862, as well as portable icons by the same artist. The oldest icons in the church date in 1806 and were painted by a capable, anonymous, folk painter.

In the church there are also stored important relics from Gousharava in Pontic Argiroupolis, portable icons (mid-19th century) and old printed ecclesiastical books (1864), with remembrances of life in the area during the decades predating the Destruction of 1922.
