Ottoman fountain Salaç
The Salaç fountain stands in the southern end of the city, at the junction of Mesimvrias and Profitis Ilias streets, in the center of the homonymous square. The main interpretation of the word “Salaç” is “small cottage” and “tobacco dryer”, indicating the purely rural/country character of the area.
It is a fountain structure consisting of a stone rectangular tank with its western wall raised. An embedded marble inscription in Arabic is set in the center of it. It indicates the public character of the fountain and the year of its construction (Hijra year 1199), which according to the Gregorian calendar corresponds to the year 1784/85.
