The old Prefecture building
In the proximity of the Archaeological Museum lies the old Prefecture administration building. It was built by French engineers, when the seat of the kaza (Ottoman administrative unit) was transferred from Gynaikocastro (Avret Hisar) to Kilkis, and reflects the new administrative standards adopted by the Ottoman authorities since the 18th century. According to the French newspaper “Journal”, published in Thessaloniki, it was inaugurated on March 17, 1896. It is a three-story building, a representative sample of neoclassical architecture.
It has been listed as a historical monument and comprises a preservable building. When the refugees arrived from Stromnitsa (1913), it housed various administrative services. It remained the seat of the Prefecture until 1978, whereas it housed the Department of Technical Services of the Prefecture, the Technical Services of the local Municipalities and Communities, as well as the Department of Commerce and Industry until 2000. Since 1985 it has been classified as a preservable monument.
