Τhe unknown past of the city of Kilkis
The Kilkis prefecture comprises the second most important entry to the country, following the Athens international airport, “Eleutherios Venizelos”. Once in the city of the same name, which is also the capital of this prefecture, one can visit the renovated Archaeological Museum and also admire the nearby old Prefecture building. The St. George hill featuring on its top the homonymous 19th c. church is at close distance. There one can also see the wonderful cave with its impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The Ottoman past of the city is visible in the Salaç fountain within the district of the same name and in the Ottoman bathhouse near the commercial center of the city. Further, the three tobacco warehouses, embedded in the modern city, outline a picture of the business and commercial activities of the 20th century. Finally, the dedicatory pilaster of the French soldiers, located nowadays in front of the Townhall of the city, recalls events of WWI.
