This route offers the opportunity of acquaintance with the cosmopolitan Goumenissa, its alleys, squares and important monuments, which evidence the wealth of its citizens. At the same time, we will discover the area’s contribution to the Macedonian Front during WWI. The tour starts from the fountain located in the central square of the city and constructed by the French Army of the East in 1918. Next, we head to the Monastery of Holy Mary to admire its wood-carved iconostasis. There follows a visit to the Church of St. George with its acute neoclassical interior elements, which also operated as the first Schoolhouse of the city. We end up at the silk factory “Chrysallis”, an industrial building with special architectural and historical value. The route is completed by an excursion to the wooded, richly-watered Paiko, which also houses the important post-byzantine churches of Griva and Kastaneri.
